Seriously Unserious.

Four April Fools' campaigns. One unmistakable brand personality.

SWOOP AIRLINES | 2018–2022

At Swoop, being an ultra-low-cost airline meant challenging conventions, including our own.

April Fools' Day gave us a chance to take the airline's unbundled pricing model to absurd extremes, creating fictional innovations that felt just believable enough to make people look twice.

The result was a recurring series of playful campaigns that turned a defining part of Swoop's business model into a source of brand entertainment.

01 / DUTY-NOT-FREE

2018 | When nature calls, the meter starts.

What if even a trip to the airplane washroom came with a pay-as-you-go price tag?

Duty-Not-Free imagined a future where passengers could pay for precisely the washroom time they needed.

An outrageous extension of unbundled airline pricing, delivered with Swoop's signature straight-faced humour.

02 / RECLINE-FOR-A-DIME

2019 | A little luxury. Ten cents at a time.

Why pay for a reclining seat when you could pay only for the recline you actually use?

Recline-for-a-Dime introduced a fictional seat upgrade that let travellers purchase additional reclining time in ten-cent increments.

Complete with increasingly ridiculous premium features, the campaign poked fun at airline upselling while reinforcing Swoop's distinctive approach to affordable flying.

03 / THE SWOOPCROWAVE

2022 | BYO dinner. We'll supply the microwave.

Who needs expensive airline food when you can bring your own?

The Swoopcrowave introduced a fictional pay-per-use onboard microwave above seat 10D, giving travellers the freedom to heat their own meals at 35,000 feet.

A perfectly ridiculous innovation—and another opportunity to make Swoop's brand personality part of the conversation.

04 / EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE IS FREE

2023 | Some baggage doesn't cost a thing.

Not every April Fools' idea needed a full production. In 2023, Swoop gave its unbundled pricing model a cheeky twist with a simple reminder: emotional baggage was always free.

A smaller social moment, but another example of how the brand used humour to make its personality unmistakable.

THE STRATEGY

Making the brand the punchline—in the best possible way.

Each campaign took an authentic element of Swoop's ultra-low-cost positioning and pushed it into the absurd.

The humour worked because it was rooted in a recognizable truth: travellers understood the concept of paying only for what they wanted, even when the fictional examples were hilariously impractical.

Together, these campaigns helped reinforce a consistent challenger-brand personality through topical, highly shareable creative.

MY ROLE

Creating room for creative ideas that stand apart.

As part of Swoop's founding marketing team and subsequent marketing leadership, I helped develop and champion a distinctive brand personality built around accessibility, irreverence and challenging category conventions.

My broader role included strategic brand and creative leadership, working with internal talent and agency partners to bring integrated creative initiatives to market.

THE TAKEAWAY

A strong brand knows when not to take itself too seriously.

These campaigns demonstrated how humour could make a business model memorable, strengthen brand recognition and build an ongoing connection with audiences—without losing sight of the brand's core proposition.
